Sears Carpet & Upholstery Care Earns The Carpet And Rug Institute's Gold Seal Of Approval For Superior Cleaning

COLUMBUS, OH | Monday, September 12, 2005

Sears Carpet & Upholstery Care has earned the Gold Seal of Approval (SOA) from the Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI), signifying that it meets the highest standards for carpet cleaning effectiveness. To qualify, extractors must undergo a stringent testing process that measures three key performance criteria: amount of soil removed, amount of water left in the carpet and impact of the equipment on carpet fibers and appearance. "As a member of the Sears family, we are extremely proud to receive industry recognition for the highest standards of excellence in carpet cleaning equipment," stated Jack Frost, General Manager of the Columbus, OH facility. "Professional laboratory testing has shown vast differences in the soil removal capability of extractors," said Werner Braun, CRI president. "The Seal of Approval program addresses the issue of carpet cleaning effectiveness by certifying only those products that meet high performance standards." Extractors that exceed average soil removal are designated with a Bronze SOA, Silver SOAs go to extractors removing more soil, and those achieving the highest level of cleaning effectiveness receive the Gold SOA. Results are determined using x-ray fluorescence (XRF) technology to measure the precise amount of soil removed. XRF was developed by private industry and enhanced by NASA for the Space Shuttle program. For the first time, an entire commercial industry is benefiting from a NASA-certified technology. "The Gold Seal of Approval is proof that our process delivers," said Paul Petru, Director of Marketing, Sears Carpet & Upholstery Care. "We simply remove more of the dirt, which is why our customers are extremely satisfied with the deep-down clean they get with Sears." To achieve its superior cleaning results, Sears employs its exclusive Two-Step Deep Clean process. First, a heated cleaning solution is applied to break up soil and loosen oil deposits. Then, a deep-cleaning pH-balancing fiber rinse removes soil and the cleaning solution from the carpet with a powerful vacuum. Carpets are left clean, soft, and free of residue that can attract dirt and make spots reappear. "We have a long association with the technical management staff at Shaw Industries, and an excellent working relationship with CRI and the carpet industry. As a result, we have been able to serve our customers with superior carpet cleaning equipment and cleaning agents that are recognized and approved by these organizations." said Wes Dvorak, Director of Research and Development, Sears Carpet & Upholstery Care. "It has been an amazing experience to work with NASA and the National Space Foundation in applying space technology to measure the effectiveness of carpet extractors for the benefit of the consumer." Companies achieving the CRI's Seal of Approval are also eligible to display the Space Foundation Seal. Only the most exceptional products that bring the benefits of space technology back to Earth are eligible for this prestigious distinction.
