To Market, To Market

Saturday, December 02, 2006

It's an unseasonably warm Saturday in November. Tree leaves are alive and fire-red, the sidewalk alive and fire-hot. It looks as though a new museum has opened on the corner of Seventh and C Streets, complete with people shuffling in-and-out, single file, peering over tables and into displays like curious tourists. Balloons sway in the warm breeze, and a vinyl sign announces Eastern Market's newest neighbor. Marvelous Market has arrived.

"I wanted for there to be another choice for people on the Hill," says Seth Shapiro, a Hill resident himself and the brains behind bringing the Market towell.the Market. "It gives people another place to sit and relax. It's a comfortable place." It's also full of divine goodies, with a delectable selection of foods for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They carry everything from sushi to pesto lasagna to chicken tenders. "We have entrees and salads for one, two, three people," says Shapiro. "People with kids, or just two people who want to share." Only open for a week, that goal is already being met. One Hill resident says that she, as a single women with a full-time job, has found Marvelous to be just that. She stops in every evening to pick up a delicious dinner on the way home. In addition to the well-rounded dining options are fresh baked breads, cakes, pastries and sweets. Recently topping the "best overall" category in a Washingtonian tasting, the chocolate chip cookies are not to be missed. Nor are the rich (but not too rich), gooey (but not too gooey), delicious (justdelicious) brownies. If sweets aren't quite your thing, you can always pick up a plump loaf of Jewish rye or a wedge of camembert.

Catering is another corner that the Market has captured, offering sandwich baskets, cheese boards and morning pastries. And if you're running low on time or your cooking abilityum.lacksMarvelous has you covered for holiday meals. Whether you forgot the sweet potatoes or want a fuss-free turkey dinner for two, pop in and pick up whatever you need. The Eastern Market store is the ninth to open and the first franchise operation for this DC-born company. "We have a strong customer promise," says Shapiro. The bones of that promise quality, community and convenience are what have made the Market so successful everywhere it goes. Community is important to Shapiro, calling out employees and noting that all but one or two live on the Hill themselves. "We are all from here," he says, with a swoop of his arm. "We have a vested interest in this place doing well." Marvelous Market is located at 303 Seventh St., SE. For more info, call: 202-544-7127 or visit www.marvelousmarket.com.
