Precision Door Service offers local garage door safety check

In recognition of June being Garage Door Safety Month, Precision Door Service offers homeowners and businesses the do's and don'ts of garage door safety and maintenance. "A garage door is basically a moving wall. As such, it is the largest moving object in most homes and one of the objects with the greatest potential to injure a family member or damage property," said Jim Bechtold of Precision Door of Charlotte, NC.

According to the National Safety Council, unnecessary accidents can be avoided by following several safety tips and performing annual safety checkups on a garage door system. Bechtold lists some general garage door safety tips and preventive measures to keep the garage door from creating a disastrous situation.

Never let a child play with a garage door remote control. Garage door openers are not toys. Always keep them out of the reach of children. Push-button wall controls are suggested to be five feet from the floor. In addition, teach children to never play under or near an pen garage door. Visually check the cables and springs every month to ensure they are in good working order. If the cables are frayed or worn, they are in danger of breaking, which can cause injury. Due to the dangers associated with high spring tension, these cables should be replaced only by a trained technician. In addition, annual checkups from a professional can keep your door operating safely and smoothly for a long time. Test the door monthly. If the door does not go up or down smoothly, you may have an unsafe condition. It should lift smoothly and with little resistance. If the door does not open or reverse, have the door system repaired or replaced by a qualified garage door technician to make repairs.

Use your manual. Every model of garage door and opener has specific safety instructions in the owner's manual that are unique to that model. In addition, the manual will contain information on what additional safety devices can be added to the system. Keep it close by for easy reference.

"A few simple precautions can protect your family from any potential harm," said Bechtold. "At Precision Door Service, we are dedicated to making sure your garage door and its parts are functioning properly." Precision Door Service provides garage door repair and installation by highly qualified Certified Garage Door Technicians. Precision Door Service offers both residential and commercial services and can perform safety inspections on your garage door and its garage door openers. "More often than not, homeowners don't pay attention to their garage door openers until there is a problem," said Bechtold. "It is important to take the time to follow safety and maintenance procedures to prevent a problem from occurring."
