The Golden Crescent Is A Hotbed Of Entrepreneurial Activity.

Wednesday, February 01, 2006

With a fast-growing population, businesses are springing up faster than you can say LLC. Entrepreneur.comthe online issue of Entrepreneur magazinesays the Charlotte-Gastonia-Rock Hill area ranks No. 2 behind only Phoenix among large cities for new business start-ups. The magazine assembled the ratings with assistance from the non-partisan research and analysis specialist National Policy Research Council. The publication pointed to the region's pro business attitude and found entrepreneurs here took advantage of proximity to a strong financial community reflected by the headquarters of Bank of America and Wachoviatwo of the biggest banks in the country. In the competition among states, North Carolina finished No. 6 in the magazine's analysis. Now we profile seven newly opened businesses from Harrisburg to Mooresville and get a perspective on entrepreneurship from the new owners who are pushing ahead with their dreams. E-Shipping Shipping Cornelius You won't find loading docks or big rigs outside the E-Shipping offices in Cornelius but Hunter East and Ben Manion plan to make a major impact on the transportation industry. They opened E-Shipping as an authorized reseller of heavy freight, overnight, ground and international shipping services needed by smalland medium-sized businesses. Leaving the pickups and deliveries to carriers, the business partners function as an outside shipping department handling invoicing, shipment tracking, account management and customer service. Hunter and Ben used personal savings and a loan from an associate to cover the franchise fee and first year's capital needs. Biggest surprise: "What was really surprising was how long the process was to set up the business," Hunter said. "Registering our LLC, getting the tax identification number, setting up banking and office functionality it all required a lot more time than we thought." Best advice: "Do your due diligence, surround yourself with solid advisors and don't be afraid to take the plunge," he said.
