Eric Steinhoff, director of franchise development for the casual restaurant chain, said the Upstate's demographics and growth are potential for Max and Erma's.
"We are actively looking for a franchise to open in 2008," Steinhoff said. "The area, growth, incomes and competition is favorable to us. It fits our demographics and lifestyles of the area." Steinhoff said certain groups of franchisees have looked at the area, specifically in Spartanburg and Greenville counties.
"That whole area is a growth area," said Steinhoff.
"Southeastern and southern U.S. is where the growth is and conditions are favorable for us to place a restaurant," said Steinhoff.
Max & Erma's is opening franchises in the coastal region of the state, said Jamie Izaks, marketing director of the restaurant chain.
Izaks said Frank Sicilia, a former owner of four Denny's locations in New York, has signed to open as many as six Max & Erma's restaurants over the next six years. He is opening the first coastal franchise in Myrtle Beach later this year.
Charlotte and Huntersville, N.C., are the closest Max & Erma's franchises north of the Upstate. Atlanta is the closest south of the area.
Max & Erma's has a new contemporary design prototype. Features include a two-story entry tower, patios, internal and external fireplaces and 6,000-square-feet of open, spacious interior.
It costs between $600,000 and $3 millionto invest and open a Max & Erma's franchise.
Founded in 1972, Max & Erma's owns and operates 77 full-service restaurants and franchises 24 restaurants.
