Jon Finds A Cut-price Franchise To Buy Into

Saturday, August 18, 2007

THIS summer's soggy weather has meant there are plenty of lush, green lawns that have grown higher than ever.

And who better to start mow ing them than Jon Dodd? He recently invested in a Jim's Mowing franchise, providing grass cutting, hedge trimming and all-round garden care for the Basingstoke area.

Mr Dodd first came across Jim's Mowing on the internet when searching for a suitable franchise to allow him to set up his own business from his Black Dam home, in Basingstoke.

He said he was impressed with the franchise group's professionalism - one of the most successful to have started in Australia.

"It's one of the world's biggest mowing and garden maintenance franchises," he explained.

advertisement "It's not the biggest in the UK, yet, but judging by the way it has gone in Australia, New Zealand and Canada, it's only a matter of time." He said he also found Jim's Mowing very competitive in terms of start-up costs, being around a third cheaper than many other similar franchises.

Describing himself as a gardener at heart, Mr Dodd has worked in horticulture for 25 years - in garden retail for the likes of Homebase and Wyevale Garden Centres.

"It's pretty tough going out alone without support - particularly if it's your first business, which it is for me," he added.

"Historically, you will find that nine out 10 franchises are still going three years after they have set up, whereas for people who have set up on their own, generally, only one in 10 survive.

"Also, research shows that customers like to contact a franchise rather than an individual because, with a brand, there is trust that it's a reputable business.

"Jim's Mowing's ethos revolves around its clearly-defined standards of service in providing a very professional job." Mr Dodd believes there is plenty of potential for growth in this line of business. He expects the majority of his customers to be 55-plus, but said it will also appeal to younger customers who do not have time to look after their gardens.

"Five or 10 years ago, no one would really think to spend their hard-earned money on calling in a mowing service," he said.

"But people are becoming more discerning with their time." To contact Mr Dodd, call him direct on 01256 412132 or via Jim's Mowing on 0845 500 1010.
