Wireless 'Net Service Grows

Air Advantage has soared since the company first hooked up customer computers to its wireless Internet service in 2002.

Now, the Frankenmuth-based Internet service provider hopes to further its growth by offering franchise opportunities.

''There's a big need for people to get Internet where Internet doesn't exist -- where cable and telecom providers don't reach,'' said Air Advantage founder Scott Zimmer. 'This is not wi-fi. This is fixed wireless broadband,'' he said. ''It's a concept that's unique.'' About 31 percent of residents in rural areas have access to broadband service, compared to 47 percent in urban areas, a press release from Air Advantage says.

''We formed a franchise concept on that, and now we're offering franchise opportunities across the US.'' Zimmer named David Simmet president of Air Advantage Franchising Group, and the company is now providing startup opportunities in 38 states.

While there is potential for nationwide growth, there is still plenty of untapped territory in Mid-Michigan.

Air Advantage, 465 N. Franklin, initially offered service to five rural communities in the Thumb using wireless radio equipment attached to grain elevator silos to broadcast the company's signal. The company served about 300 customers in 2003 and has seen that number rise to over 4,000 in its network of 40 communities.

''We see a very large opportunity in Bay, Midland, Saginaw and Gratiot counties,'' Zimmer said.

Startup cost for an Air Advantage franchise is estimated at $50,000 to $100,000, with total initial investment estimated at $178,418 to $257,915.

Franchisees will have a full line of Internet services available to offer business and residential customers.

Air Advantage residential service starts at $38 a month, with no need for customers to buy or rent equipment..

Potential franchisees do not need to have extensive knowledge of computers and networks, Zimmer said.

''You don't have to be a techie -- we take care of that aspect for you,'' he said. ''You don't need to be computer-savvy to make this opportunity work.''
