Tip 1: Consider re-facing cabinets and counters versus a full remodel. It is much more cost efficient and time saving. You will also avoid the inevitable mess of a full deconstruction. If the space and layout work for you, why not reface the countertops and cabinets in your kitchen and bath instead of starting from scratch? Organizers and slide-outs often can be fitted into existing cabinets to improve functionality.
Tip 2: Consider using companies that offer a myriad of services, thus reducing the number of different companies working in a small space. Working with one company may offer money-saving benefits as well. They can more efficiently keep workers on schedule and order the materials for all of your improvements.
Tip 3: Ask the remodeling company for referrals and photos of recent jobs for clients who have had done what you're asking to be done. A picture can be worth a thousand wordsand save you worry and regret. A home improvement company with happy customers should be able to provide references. Talking with someone who has been through the remodel process will give you a better idea of what to expect from the homeowner's perspective, as well as give you confidence or raise a warning flag about the home improvement company you are considering.
Tip 4: Avoid contractors requiring a deposit. Why? If they are under-funded, then the potential for problems increases tremendously. You want to work with a company whose workers are happy and paid on time and whose vendors enjoy meeting their needs. You will want to be satisfied that they are insured and have a good reputation for reliability.
Tip 5: Consider "resale-ability" of any bathroom and kitchen project. Long-term use and mass-appeal outweigh trendy in-the-moment design schemes. Will your finished kitchen or bath look move-in ready to future homebuyers or to you in five years? Does it have classic appeal or are you putting a little too much of your own personality into it? Let your wilder side show in decorating accessories and paint that are easily changeable as your taste or circumstances change, not in the more permanent design and furnishings.
As you prepare to re-do or update your bathroom or kitchen, pay special attention to companies that show their home improvement work or kitchen and bath products in ads or brochures. Examine the photos closely to identify the style, materials and finishes that will make your rooms into your dream come true.
