Biz Beat: Beach Hut Deli A Franchise With Its Own Identity

If you're looking for Tahoe-infused beach atmosphere and a sandwich, check out the Beach Hut Deli.

Chris and Brooke Hernandez teamed up with Chris' cousin, Jason Keating, and his wife, Tamara, to open the deli, which serves sandwiches, beer and wine, along with sides such as potato salad and chips.

"It's a deli with a five-star attitude," Jason Keating said.

The deli opened two weeks ago, and the place has been busy ever since. Brooke Hernandez said it's fun because she knows every other customer who walks through the door.

Keating said the idea came to him to buy a franchise three years ago. He called up Chris Hernandez shortly after.

They waited for two years for a location that they liked, Chris Hernandez said.

They decided on the location at the "Y" because it's local-based - everyone drives through it, and it's between the high school and the hospital, Brooke Hernandez said.

Jim Grant / Tahoe Daily Tribune The cool thing about the Beach Hut Deli franchise is it's not like most cookie-cutter operations, Chris Hernandez said.

"They don't sell you a box," Chris Hernandez said. "You buy the menu and the vibe." And the vibe is there - not one franchise looks alike, Jason Keating said. For the store at the South Shore, customers experience a beach vibe with a Tahoe attitude.

Everyone lent a hand in creating the deli. Keating's mom designed the shop, and his father was the contractor. Brooke and Chris Hernandez's parents helped with the labor, too.

"It was a full family affair from the ground up," Chris Hernandez said.

The shop also offers wireless Internet and high-definition television screens for customers.

The deli is at 1072 Emerald Bay Road and is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays. For more information, call (530) 541-7873.
