Taste Of The Island: Sweet Peppers

Friday, September 05, 2008

Whoever says that eating healthy can't be fun and tasty has never eaten at Sweet Peppers Deli in Gulf Shores, Ala.

The restaurant, which opened for business in August, offers its customers fast, healthy food that taste great and is fun to eat.

Ryan and Hillary Bell are the owners of Sweet Peppers Deli, which is part of a franchise organization. The Bell's, who moved to Alabama from Mississippi are pleased with the progress of the business.

"We had our official grand opening. On August 12. On August 11, we held a special opening dinner, with all proceeds going to benefit Youth Outreach of the Gulf Coast," Hillary said.

Hillary said the idea behind Sweet Peppers Deli is quite simple.

"This business strives to sell fresh, healthy food," she said. "We try to give our customers a variety of choices of food that is good for them, but still has great taste and flavor and is fun to eat. We don't serve fried food. We only serve steamed or grilled selections. We also offer liteline choices which include salads and veggie wraps." The panini is one of the more popular items featured on the menu.

"We have been selling lots of panini's here recently," said Ryan. "People really seem to love this sandwich." The Mediterranean Chicken Panini is a customer favorite. Made with layers of Genoa hard salami, pepperoni, sliced grilled chicken tossed in Sweet Pepper's special Greek dressing, with melted provolone cheese on focaccia bread, customers enjoy a healthy but great tasting meal, Ryan said.

Cost of the Mediterranean Chicken Panini, which includes one side item is $7.29.

But, if you want to splurge a little while eating at Sweet Peppers, never fear, decadent desserts are available.

"The Chocolate Eruption cake," Hillary said is delicious. "Sometimes people just want to treat themselves. Even if you eat healthy, a little treat can be good from time to time." The Chocolate Eruption cake is a fantasy dessert made with rich chocolate cream studded with nuts, chocolate chips and turtle cheesecake and has chocolate curls and golden caramel erupting from the center.

A slice of this cake costs $3.99.

Whole cakes sells $38.95.

In addition to being a full-service deli, the business also offers a catering service.

"We will cater all types of events," Hillary said. "We offer all of our food items with our catering service. We can provide sandwich trays, wrap trays, Panini trays or desserts trays. We will do a variety tray, whatever the customer requests. This way if someone is planning a party or special event, they can offer fun healthy food, but also serve some delicious cookies or cakes as well." In addition to the wraps, specialty sandwiches, salads and panini's, starter appetizers are also available. These starters include chips n' Rotel, chili nachos, homemade chili, chips n' salsa and the soup of the day.

Eating at Sweet Peppers Deli makes for a quick but great lunch.

"If you come in and see a long line," Ryan said, "don't be discouraged. We provide quick service. Our average ticket time is seven minutes. We pride ourselves on this. This way people who only have 30 minutes for lunch can come in, order, eat, visit and still have plenty of time to get back to work. They get to eat and enjoy their meal." "We love to eat here," said Linda Osterday and Dawn Brewton of Gulf Shores, Ala.

"They have great food, great choices," said Osterday. "This is my third time here to eat.

"They offer a variety of food choices and healthy choices," said Brewton, "plus it is a good place to come for lunch because it doesn't take long to get your food.
