Athletic Nation: Our Founder's Story

Thursday, November 20, 2008

By the year 2000, our founder had hit bottom. At 38 years old, Dennis Mulgannon found himself out of work, going through a divorce, and facing financial ruin. To top it off he was out of shape and thirty pounds overweight. With nowhere else to turn, Dennis found himself getting back into fitness -- a decision that would eventually turn his entire life around.

In the beginning Dennis assumed that by just showing up at the gym, lifting some weights, and doing a little cardio that he would snap right back into shape and regain his high school physique. He soon found out that was not the case. Time has a way of playing tricks on us all! Dennis also noticed that the other regulars at his gym didn't seem to be improving either. After months of working out, they all continued to carry the same bulk. What happened next provided the framework for one of the fastest growing fitness franchises in America.

Dennis looked to athletes and their training programs to find out what changes he should make to his own routine. He ratcheted up the intensity levels and included athleticism in his workout program, while incorporating a common sense approach to his own diet. Most importantly, he changed his mentality and allowed himself no excuses. What followed surprised even Dennis -- he lost thirty pounds almost overnight and began regaining the muscle and physical form he once had.

Those results empowered Dennis to write "Reality Fitness in 90 Days," a top-selling book that outlines the details of Dennis's revolutionary training program. To date the book has helped thousands achieve a fitness level that they never thought possible, but Dennis didn't stop there. He decided to help people get fit both physically and financially, and as a result, the Athletic Nation franchise model opened its doors in California in 2005. Today, there are Athletic Nation locations in Arizona, California, Florida, Massachusetts, North Carolina, and Texas with new gyms opening in more states every month.

Dennis continues to not only challenge himself, but Athletic Nation Gym members and franchise owners alike. Are you up for the challenge? Fill out our Franchise Application and you'll be well on your way to turning your own life around.
