Atlanta's Own?: Flying Biscuit Cafe

Monday, February 09, 2009

The Flying Biscuit Cafe is in an interesting category of restaurants. It's the type of place that is so quirky, so local, so unique, that the average Joe who stumbles in here has to assume that there could be only one. It has the neighborhood feel to it that seems very anti-corporate, anti-chain, and anti-expansion. Given that, it is surprising to constantly be seeing new incarnations of this restaurant in various places in and around Atlanta. Further research will show that there are as many as ten of them spanning three states; personally, I was shocked to learn that little fact.

It kind of disappoints me, to be honest. It could be petty pride or jealousy that tugs, however gingerly, at my insides to know that the tasty, quirky eatery that has grown in the amalgam of intertwined memories of my civic pride has cheated on me. It's given in to the economically enticing draw of markets as fresh and new as the specials that are a-little-too-conveniently printed in plastic table ads, opposite the drinks of the house. I"ve eaten at several of the Atlanta branches of the Flying Biscuit Cafe, and I would hate to imply that the delicious, healthy, eco-green fruit of this Atlanta institution does fall farther the more you branch out. That being said, I can"t finish without giving insight into the numerous great meals I"ve enjoyed at the Flying Biscuit. The menu has a colorful selection of warmly inviting names, backed by the classic yet updated starters, sandwiches, salads, and breakfast dishes they represent. The menu favors a "breakfast anytime" theme, but there are always alternatives to be enjoyed. Nothing particular should be avoided, save for maybe the eggs benedict, which diehard fans might find a bit bland, but otherwise the Flying biscuit has a respectable menu. Of course try the namesake flying biscuits. They are quite large, fresh, and flavorful, not to be enjoyed without the potpourri-esque cranberry apple butter. As always, the key here is location, location, location. At some Flying Biscuits I usually have great service, great food, and a great view (sometimes dependent on my date,) but at others the experience is similar, without the crisp, clear, picture, much like a photocopy of a photocopy. You can read the message and get the point, but it's not worth framing if you get what I mean. I"d say it's worth the drive, assuming you"re not in Midtown, to enjoy the Biscuits at the original Candler Park and Midtown Piedmont locales. They"re sure to give you the best Flying Biscuit experience that's to be had.
