Coles Buys Into Burger Chain

Friday, October 16, 2009

An Atlanta entrepreneur known for coffee and cookies is getting into the burger business.

Michael J. Coles, founder of The Great American Cookie Co. and former CEO of Caribou Coffee Co., has bought into Boardwalk Investment Group LLC, which owns the franchise rights to open 50 Boardwalk Fresh Burgers & Fries restaurants in Georgia.

The Maryland-based chain is a quick-service burger, sandwich and fries concept that has six stores, mostly in the Washington, D.C./Baltimore area. Boardwalk Fries, also a Maryland-based company, has been franchising since 1981 and is one of the largest french fry retail chains in the country.

"I've sold desserts," said Coles. "I've served coffee. Now it's time to serve the main course."
