The franchise attorney moved from Detroit to the Coachella Valley five years ago to take on this position with the expanding company he describes as "providing high-tech solutions to low-tech problems for water leaks" in both commercial and residential properties.
"In law you get paid if you can solve your client's problem," Berenbaum said. "Ultimately, it doesn't matter what the issue is you are still finding a way to solve problems in a service business." The company's way to solve water leaks in houses, pools and businesses is doing it in the least invasive way, without destruction.
Berenbaum oversees a local office of 40 employees not far from the airport, as well as 120 franchises and 350 leak specialists throughout the world. One of his many roles is to establish more franchises for the 35-year-old company.
"There is still an open territory in the UK," said Berenbaum, who travels for expansion business about 30 to 40 percent of the time.
Berenbaum recently shared with The Desert Sun the start of his business journey and what he does when he takes a detour from it.
Question: How did you choose this business? Berenbaum: I had a choice to make. I started to become a photographer when I was in college studying political science; I worked in a studio. I knew I had to make the decision to go with law or photography. Now, photography is a hobby. I take photos of my family my wife (Kathryn) and son (Zachary, 9) and daughter (Kathryn, 4).
What makes your business unique in the valley? No other company is doing noninvasive leak detection. Most of our business comes from positive word of mouth, plus a variety of referrals from insurances, real estate and pool techs.
What would you be doing if you had another career? I'm fortunate to have a good career in an interesting business. I would try to find a business that gave me all that, perhaps a role in public service politics.
How do you enjoy your time away from work? We love to go to water parks with the kids, like Knott's Soak City. Also, Starbucks is my office away from the office I spend time there.
What's something most people don't know about you? I'm a huge Elvis fan. I listen to the music, have a few photos up. I'll visit the "Honeymoon House" (in Palm Springs) in August on the anniversary of his death.
