Fantastic Sams Plans 8 Salons In Knoxville

National hair salon chain Fantastic Sams intends to move into the Knoxville market with plans to establish eight franchise locations.

The company is in talks with some candidates now and is looking for others who want to establish a salon, said Scott Colabuono, president and CEO of Fantastic Sams. Colabuono said no salon locations have been picked yet.

"We don't look at locations until the prospect is very near closing and is licensed to operate," he said.

Fantastic Sams, which began when founder Sam Ross opened his first salon in Memphis in 1974, has about 1,300 salons across North America and 29 in Tennessee. The company now wants to establish itself in Knoxville, and Colabuono said it will work with each franchise owner to develop a salon with eight chairs that employs up to 12 people.

"We are a full-service salon. We do haircuts for women and men and we do multicultural cuts," he said.

Typically, a franchise is a $150,000 to $160,000 investment, Colabuono said. The company helps locate a site, trains the owner and employees and helps work out an advertising campaign.

Colabuono said he believes Knoxville's size and location give it great growth potential for Fantastic Sams.

"We are just starting with eight (salons), but Knoxville can do many more than that," he said.

Colabuono said that while many companies have spent conservatively because of the recession, Fantastic Sams takes the opposite approach with an aggressive expansion campaign that added 54 locations in 2009.

"Fantastic Sams is a low-cost, recession-resistant model," he said. "The good thing is you have a repeat customer base. Everyone needs and wants to look good, especially if they are looking for a job."
