Franchisee Wants To Bring 2012 Wheelchair Curling Championships To Sudbury

MEDIchair Sudbury owner Norm Gervais is optimistic about hosting Northern Ontario Championships

Norm Gervais is confident that Sudbury will be an ideal host for the 2012 Northern Ontario Wheelchair Championships. "The Sudbury Curling Club is wheelchair accessible and very familiar with wheelchair curling -- plus they know how to run and host top-notch curling events," explains Gervais, owner of MEDIchair Sudbury. When not running his home medical equipment business, Gervais is a volunteer curling mentor to a wheelchair team that he's sponsoring in the Northern Ontario Championships in Thunder Bay, Feb. 25th 27th 2011.

"Wheelchair curling is a lot harder than it looks," notes Gervais. There is no sweeping and every curler must throw his/her 40-pound stone from a stationery wheelchair using a curling stick. Each team has four players, one of which must be a female. Some teams also have a spare. I believe that bringing the Northern Ontario Championships to Sudbury in 2012 will provide great exposure for wheelchair curling and get more people involved in the sport locally." With guidance from Coach Thomas Matheson, Skip Steve Daniel, Third Rick Prud'homme, Second Sarah Lashbrook and Lead Dennis Duclos are busy practicing several hours each weekend to hone their skills for the Northern Ontario Championships. In preparation for the tournament, the Sudbury team also travelled to Thunder Bay in December where they received two days of high performance training from Team Canada's national coaches. The winner of the Thunder Bay bonspiel will represent Northern Ontario at the Canadian Wheelchair Curling Championships in Edmonton.
