About one month after a locally owned store, Ink in a Blink, opened in Schofield, national franchise Cartridge World opened Monday in Rib Mountain, at 3720 Rib Mountain Drive.

"We're able to charge less for the product because we get people's empty (ink) cartridges," said Charlie Giedd, retail operations manager for three Cartridge World franchises in Wisconsin. "The cartridge itself is the most expensive part." Cartridge World works like this: Customers bring in empty ink cartridges from their computer printers. Cartridge World then exchanges the empty cartridge for one that has been refilled at its Eau Claire facility. Or, if the cartridge is rare, it is sent to be refilled, and customers can expect it returned within three business days, Giedd said.

Generally, Cartridge World can save customers about 25 percent on ink costs when compared to new cartridges.

Giedd, who helped Cartridge World open its stores in Eau Claire and Hudson, said the company was drawn to Wausau because it has the potential to attract clients not only from the metropolitan area, but also from the rest of central Wisconsin.

"On the weekends, it seems everyone comes in and does their shopping (in the Wausau area)," Giedd said. "And we have a Hudson store and Eau Claire store, so it just falls in line with which way we're going." Giedd said the Hudson and Eau Claire stores have been wildly successful, especially as businesses looking to pinch pennies during rough economic times. He said sales to businesses make up about 60 percent of Cartridge World's profits at the three Wisconsin stores. The Eau Claire store is ranked 10th in sales out of 650 Cartridge World stores in the U.S., but Giedd said he suspects Wausau can out perform the Eau Claire location.

All products are backed by a 30-day warranty, and Giedd said Cartridge World will handle any problem that arises if a cartridge is faulty.

"Our product works great," Giedd said. "But it's like renting a DVD. Once in a while, you'll get a scratch because other people have used it." The store stocks all major brands, including Hewlett-Packard, Canon and Dell. Cartridge World also stocks new ink products.
