Rusty Taco To Open Branch Near Dallas' Parkland Hospital In July

Rusty Taco, the taqueria chain launched by Uncle Julio's founder Rusty Fenton, will finally expand in July, with a second local branch to open on Harry Hines near Parkland Hospital.

It'll go into a space that was most previously an old person's scooter store (i.e., not a Vespa) but was once upon a time a McDonald's. Fenton says he hopes to get it open by mid-July.

"We had brokers bringing locations by a couple times a week," he said. "We learned a lot from our first store -- how customers use us, when they like to eat, the kind of people we attract. Fridays especially, we're the family restaurant. During the day, it's workers and neighborhood people." Surprisingly, the Harry Hines location "matches up pretty good for what we were doing," Fenton said.

"With the Parkland Hospital system, there's a lot of new development," he said. "We're a little ahead of the curve. But Maple & Motor has proved that neighborhood is a good spot for restaurants. And it's right by my favorite BBQ joint, Sonny Bryan's." Rusty Taco is also expanding outside of Dallas.

"We signed another lease in College Station, at Northgate, where all the kids hang out," he said. "I went to school at A&M, my daughter is there now. We'll open that one in August. We also opened our first franchise in St. Paul/Minnesota. The food there is so unique to them. We were a little apprehensive about going into Minnesota, but they're craving this style of spiciness."
