College Kids Return: A Bust and Boom for Restaurants Back to school week, the days immediately preceding the first day of school, is traditionally one of the weakest time periods for the restaurant industry. Parents and students are busy shopping for school supplies, which also stretches the monthly household budget. However, the month after kids go back to school, especially in homes where students are college age, is a boom for restaurants. Parents take time to give themselves a treat, enjoying a meal or two out of the house during the month. Restaurants in college towns see a huge upsurge in business as kids flock to the local pizza places, sandwich joints and coffee shops.
Apartment and Dorm Room Furnishing According to the National Retail Federation, 25 percent of college age students will live on campus. Other reports indicate the about 40 percent of college students will live off campus. That means a lot of new furniture will be purchased. Items like mattresses, bed frames, futons, desks, couches, tables and chairs will all be needed to fill out the students new digs. And while dorm rooms come partially furnished, many students will add extra chairs, shelves, TV/stereo stands and cabinets to store their belongings.
Where to Put All That Stuff The self storage industry also benefits from back to school season. It starts in the spring, when households with college students face a storage challenge: students coming home with loads of stuff. Parents, who may have been using their child's room for other purposes such as an office or storage space of their own, now face the dilemma of finding room for everything. Zippy Shell's Marketing Director, Ben Taylor, says portable moving and storage containers are made for that situation.
"Imagine that you have to take a whole room full of stuff and put it somewhere so that your kid can fill the room with his or her own stuff. Where do you put it? Parents love that we bring a shell to them, they fill it up, we take it away and store it, and then return it when the student goes to back to school." Alternatively, Taylor says, many parents arrange for the students belongings to be stored near their college or university. "In that case, we bring the shell to the student. We keep their belonging in a secure storage facility and it arrives back at school the same day the student does."
