Liberty Tax Reaches Deal To Put Kiosks In Walmarts

Liberty Tax Service will operate kiosks in more than 300 Walmart stores from early January through April 16.

The company already occupies year-round office space in about a dozen Walmart Supercenter stores around the country, said John Hewitt, founder and CEO of Liberty Tax.

Liberty Tax operated 30 to 40 seasonal kiosks in Walmart stores until about five years ago, when the retail giant decided to drop from three temporary tax-preparation providers to two, Hewitt said.

Walmart has agreed to let Liberty Tax join Jackson Hewitt Tax Service and H&R Block as operators of temporary tax-preparation kiosks in 2013, Hewitt said.

"This is a major effort," Hewitt said of the store's increased presence in Walmart this year.

Liberty Tax also operates seasonally in Sears, Kmart and Family Dollar stores. Last year, the company had about 100 kiosks in those three chains combined, Hewitt said.

The two closest Walmart store Liberty Tax kiosks to Hampton Roads will be in South Hill, about 115 miles west of Norfolk, and in Nags Head, N.C., on the Outer Banks.

Liberty Tax provides computerized income tax preparation and electronic filing of tax returns, and it also offers free tax return reviews and audit assistance.

The company has 4,100 offices nationwide and in Canada, according to a news release.

JTH Holding Inc., the parent company of Liberty Tax, is based in Virginia Beach.
