Opening Fantastic Sams' Franchise Proves To Be Fantastic Move

Helping people look their best without spending a fortune is one of Barbara Aducci's favorite parts of her workday.

But the Merrimack resident who recently opened her third Fantastic Sam's salon didn't get her start in the beauty business.

A longtime travel agent, Aducci, like many others in her field, found herself without a job following the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001.

"Fewer people were traveling then, and those who were began buying their plane tickets over the Internet," Aducci said. "I ended up taking a voluntary layoff." Having long aspired to own her own business, Aducci took a long, thoughtful look at her own monthly beauty routine.

"As a woman with prematurely gray hair, I've always been adamant about getting my hair colored at least once every six weeks," she said. "It got me thinking. I began looking into the salon industry." After meeting with corporate officials at Fantastic Sam's, Aducci's career endeavors began to slowly take root.

In July 2006, she opened her first Fantastic Sam's salon in Tyngsboro, Mass., just past the New Hampshire state line in Nashua.

Like her persistent gray hairs, business has continued to grow, and two years later Aducci opened her second salon in Manchester.

Last March, she opened a third salon in Hudson, in the busy Market Basket shopping plaza on Route 102.

These days, Aducci has 25 permanent employees, including the five stylists employed in Hudson.

Her local salon franchises are open seven days a week, offering a full-range of haircuts, colors, permanents, highlights and facial waxing services.

"My goal has, at all times, been to keep people happy," Aducci said, noting that the Hudson location has already proven a huge success due to the site's "incredible amount of foot traffic." "People see our sign, and they just walk in," she said. "We've already had quite a few repeat visitors, and I'm so fortunate to have such incredible staff here on board." Noting the surging popularity of the Hudson location, Aducci said she's definitely considering opening a fourth salon in the future.

She said her new neighbors, including the management at the Hudson Market Basket, have been particularly helpful and supportive.

A national franchise, Fantastic Sam's is growing in the Granite State, with two Manchester stores in addition to the new one in Hudson.

More than 1,200 Fantastic Sam's salons are located throughout North America, making them one of the world's largest family hair care franchises.
