Joe Harris, representing the Shirley May Food Group, said they were inspired to give more after hearing about the success of the Greater Augusta Regional Chamber of Commerce in the Governor's Bowl Food and Fund Drive.
"Wendy's and the Shirley May Food Group are just trying to give back a little bit to the people who have supported our business since we opened our first store in 1978," Harris said. Quoting Wendy's founder, Dave Thomas, Harris added: "Just be nice, do the right thing and give back to the community." Their gift will allow the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank to provide 16,000 meals to people in need.
The Greater Augusta Chamber and its members were recently congratulated by Gov. McDonnell for winning the Governor's Bowl for two consecutive years, providing more than 200,000 meals to Valley families in need through their food and fund collection. The Shirley May Food Group was one of the businesses to help the Chamber clench the win with their $1,500 donation during drive.
"This is a community that digs deep to take care of one another, and it's evident in the way businesses and individuals come together daily to help us solve this problem of hunger," said Michael McKee, CEO of the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. "I am deeply grateful to the Shirley May Food Group for this generous gift, the Greater Augusta Regional Chamber for rallying the business community to help thousands of struggling, hardworking neighbors, and each and every business that responds to the need all throughout the year."
