Susan and Michael Jean opened their second Painting With a Twist location Jan. 9, and the 2,400-SF space at 1401 S.E. Walton Blvd. in Bentonville represents the last of their expansion plans, at least for the near future.
Though the Jeans now employ 18 store managers, art instructors and assistants, the memories of the 12- to 18-hour workdays when they started their first store in Fayetteville are still fresh in Susan Jean's mind. Still, she said, "I would rather do a 12-hour day here having a good time than an eight-hour job somewhere else," later adding, "It's like working at Disney World."
The Painting With a Twist franchise has gained fame by providing painting classes for working adults. Each session includes an artistic theme, an instructor and wine. And while the franchise concept is still built around its classes, the stores also offer the option to reserve time slots and resources for corporate and private events, such as birthday parties.
This business model relies on the website PaintingWithATwist.com, through which reservations for classes and events at all the franchise locations are made. The franchise's central office runs the website, and individual stores plug their schedules into a calendar template there.
For Susan Jean, one of the most appealing characteristics of the franchise is that the website also allows owners of Painting With a Twist stores throughout the country to share their ideas for new classes with each other. In addition to the usual evening classes, for example, there are also children's classes and morning classes where the traditional wine is switched out for coffee or mimosas.
