Nursing homes, in-home care offer options for seniors
As founder of IKOR Global, an advocacy group for seniors and the disabled, Patricia Maisano knows what to look for when choosing in-home care or a nursing facility for older adults, knowledge she tries sharing with families who seek the organization's help.
For instance, she said she toured a facility with a woman who was looking for a place for her elderly mother. The facility was new, and after inspecting several floors, Maisano asked her what she thought.
She said the woman marveled at how beautiful the building was, how much she loved the new curtains and furniture. But then Maisano asked how many aides she noticed as they toured. When she said there were four, Maisano pointed out there were two "" they saw two aides twice "" and suggested the home might be a better fit once it added staff.
In-home care
A 2012 survey by the National Council on Aging found about 90 percent of respondents prefer to stay in their own homes as they get older. But that doesn"t mean they won"t need outside care.
