Having Fun with Mulch
With warmer temperatures on the horizon, your grass's growing season will soon be back in full force. That means it will soon be time to dig out your mower from the shed or garage and get to work. Did you know that there are inexpensive ways to give back to your lawn and the environment"all with the help of your lawn mower?
The majority of homeowners opt to rake up grass clippings from their lawns after mowing. Although this gives the lawn a neat and tidy appearance, it is actually recommended that you leave clippings behind to break down naturally. This process, known as grasscycling, has multiple benefits:
It can provide up to 25% of your lawn's total nutrient requirements. When grass clippings decompose, they recycle essential plant nutrients such as nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus back into the soil. Think of it as a free fertilization for your lawn!
Because clippings are composed primarily of water (between 80-90%), they are able to break down quickly and moisten your lawn in the process. This helps reduce the need for supplemental irrigation.
Using your grass clippings as mulch eliminates the need for raking and bagging, saving you time, effort, and a major backache.
Mulching is good for the environment. In addition to cutting down on waste that would otherwise end up in our landfills, leaving grass clippings behind provides your turf with a much-needed nutrient boost. The result? A thicker, greener lawn that is able to fight back against insects, disease and drought.
Ready to start making the most of your mulch? Here are a few mowing tips to help you use grass clippings effectively:
Remove the grass catcher attachment on your mower.
Always cut with a sharp blade.
Maintain a tall cutting height (2.5-3 inches).
Do not cut more than one third of the grass blade at a time, as this creates a thick covering of clippings on the lawn that can lead to turf damage and disease.
This spring, experiment with mulch and give back to your yard in a healthy, cost-effective way. Speak with your local Weed Man professional for additional mowing tips specific to your area.
