My Gym Children's Fitness Center Owner Rubin Aims To Fight Childhood Obesity In Yorktown

Tuesday, January 14, 2014

A Yorktown gym is hoping to keep kids in shape.

Stamford, Conn., resident Liz Rubin recently took over My Gym at 42 Triangle Center North in Yorktown. My Gym offers programs for kids from 6 weeks to 13 years, giving them much needed exercise and helping them gain confidence along the way.

Rubin, who also has gyms in Stamford and Manhattan, offers new programs 52 weeks a year, keeping her staff regularly up to date with weekly staff meetings.

"It's always fun and exciting here," Rubin said. "Kids learn all different types of exercises and skills."

At My Gym, kids can learn balance or swing on a trapeze.

"The build confidence and self-esteem," Rubin said. "It's so great to see their proud faces when they master a forward roll. It makes it fun."

My Gym also has a zipline that kids get to use at birthday parties.

My Gym is a franchise with more than 200 locations in the country. Rubin first was familiar with My Gym when she brought her own kids to the gym when they were younger.

"This is a really rewarding job," Rubin said. "It's great to see the changes in these kids. This is where I wanted to be."

My Gym has been inspired by First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move campaign, which is dedicating to solving childhood obesity.

"It is so important for kids to be active and exercise," Rubin said.

Rubin said it is important for kids to be fit and exercising at a young age and to get them moving. My Gym also helps work with kids who might have behavioral issues or might not be coordinated.

"They feel uncomfortable doing a team sport," Rubin said. "We teach them how to jump rope and do pushups. They get to run around. It's a gentle boor camp."

Rubin said she loves seeing kids who would trip over their own two feet become athletic.

"It's amazing," Rubin said. "You have to be here. Seeing the difference in these kids is so rewarding. Parents are beaming, they really see the difference."

Rubin said she has enjoyed being in Yorktown.

"It's very community oriented," Rubin said. "There are so many nice families."

My Gym will be hosting an open house on Saturday, Jan. 18 from 9 a.m. to noon and Sunday, Jan. 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.. For more information, contact 914-302-7705
