For the owners of Gigi's Cupcakes of Hoover and Trussville, Alabama, golf comes first this week. And, everyone at Gigi's says that's just fine.
After helping lead the LSU Tigers into the NCAA Semifinals at the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships a week ago, Smylie Kaufman, the 21 year old son of Gigi's owners Jeff and Pam Kaufman, earned a spot in the field for the 114th United States Open Championship at the historic course at Pinehurst No. 2 in Pinehurst, North Carolina.
"We could not be more proud as parents!" said Jeff Kaufman. "It will be the best Father's Day ever when Smylie hoists the U.S. Open trophy on Sunday....ok, I'm kidding, no pressure..but it could happen!"
Smylie had an amazing season in his senior year at LSU. He finished as this year's SEC runner-up with a second-place finish at the SEC Championship before tying for sixth place as the top Tiger at the NCAA Columbia Regional to lead the team into the NCAA Championships. He helped his LSU Tiger team make history with a run to the Final Four as they tied for second place in stroke play before earning a spot in the NCAA semifinals of match play to earn their best NCAA finish since 1967.
Smylie will make his major championship debut at the U.S. Open next week as an LSU alumnus after graduating following the 2014 spring semester with his degree in marketing.
His brother Luckie will be his caddy!
Congratulations Smylie and good luck from all of us at Gigi's Cupcakes! Go Team Kaufman!
