Relax The Back To Open Store In Louisville

A retail store specializing in back-care products and services is expanding into Louisville.

A franchise of Relax the Back, a California-based retailer that provides ergonomic products to assist with and soothe back pain, plans to open in the Forum Shopping Center, at 260 N. Hurstbourne Parkway, near Shelbyville Road, according to franchise owner Jennifer Marshall. Marshall will own and operate the location with her husband, Mark Marshall, and she said they are aiming for a Feb. 16 opening.

The couple moved from North Carolina specifically to open the franchise, Jennifer Marshall said in an interview Monday.

Relax the Back has more than 90 locations in North America, but Marshall said this is the first franchised location in Louisville or Kentucky. It is also their first Relax the Back franchise.

"We thought there was a need," Marshall said of opening the store here. "There's nothing else around here like this." According to a news release from the company, Relax the Back offers "a unique experience using a holistic approach to the six categories of spinal health: sleep, recliners, massage, fitness, travel, and office products." The store will carry more than 300 items that specifically target back pain and relief, such as customized office systems, mattresses and pillows from Tempur-Pedic International Inc., back and neck supports and zero-gravity recliners.

"Louisville is a great place for a store like ours," Mark Marshall said in the news release. "It has a long tradition of health care innovation and excellence which mirrors our company's philosophy." The Marshalls, who are leasing the facility, are in the midst of wholesale renovations to the space, which will include 3,000 square feet of sales floor, according to Jennifer Marshall. She declined to disclose terms of the lease. But she said they are investing about $80,000 on upgrades, installing new flooring, a new HVAC system, a new electrical system and light fixtures and a new restroom.

The Marshalls also plan to hire two or three sales staff and a delivery worker, she said.
