The Honey Do Service Handyman home repair franchise comes to Monroe County

Saturday, January 17, 2015

Barbara Leesha remembers how difficult it was to get a repairman or handyman in the more than 20 years she has lived in Monroe Conty.

And that prompted her to become a franchise owner and office manager in the Honey Do Service Inc. that opened its first office in Pennsylvania at 3450 Route 611 in Stroudsburg. A formal ribbon cutting is scheduled for noon on Thursday.

"That's what got me interested," said Leesha. "I knew how hard it was to get someone to come in and to do something. They wouldn't call back. They wouldn't show up. And when we went through the processes of starting up and getting permits, people were saying to me, "You're going to do great. This is exactly what we need here." I'm very optimistic hearing that from people who know the area and work here." The franchise, the first one to open in Pennsylvania from a company with locations in seven states, does everything from cleaning gutters and chimney to plumbing and remodeling kitchens.

Leesha has a foreman and an estimator and is filling two accredited craftsman positions. She first got the idea because her nephew launched the first and only Honey Do service in Branchburg, N.J. that Lessha said has taken off. The company, which began in 2002, also has locations in Ohio, West Virginia, Georgia and its home state of Virginia where it is headquartered in Bristol.

"What makes us different is we offer employee benefits to all of our skilled workers," said company founder and CEO Brad Fluke, who said he plans to expand westward this year. "I don't know of any other business for handymen that does this." Fluke built The Honey Do Service from scratch from his father's two-car garage by analyzing all the negatives that homeowners associate with remodellers and handyman companies, then addressing them one by one. A big consideration, he said, is not only showing up for the appointed work but being there on time.

Leesha had owned a plastics company in Stroudsburg - RBM Polymers - which had closed recently. "It was getting harder to survive in this area if you have a small business," Leesha said.

She said her company was a member of the Greater Pocono Chamber of Commerce and plans to enroll this company there and with the Pocono Builders Association.

But she feels her business acumen will enhance the growth of this franchise, which is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Call 570-620-9999 for information.
