Mathnasium franchise opening in Sioux Falls

A new franchise offering after-school math programs will hold a grand opening Saturday to coincide with so-called 'Super Pi Day.' Mathnasium of Sioux Falls is owned by Matthew and Susan Manes and is part of the national Mathnasium Learning Center concept.

Matthew Manes ran a Mathnasium in Nashville, Tenn., and is a former high school math teacher. He will serve as the director for the Sioux Falls center. Susan Manes is a University of Sioux Falls graduate who worked in marketing in the music and entertainment industry in Nashville and will serve as office and marketing manager.

"Mathnasium of Sioux Falls focuses solely on math, so we know how to teach it in a way that really connects with kids. I've seen first-hand how the Mathnasium method has helped struggling students develop into 'A' students who genuinely enjoy math," Matthew Manes said. "Children at Mathnasium quickly learn that math can be fun and interesting as well as extraordinarily useful, both in school and in everyday life." Mathnasium is in The Bridges at 57th retail center in the former Peachwave Frozen Yogurt space.

The concept serves children from kindergarten through high school. It starts with an assessment of a student's ability that is used to create a learning plan that combines mental, verbal, visual, tactile and written techniques.

There are more than 500 Mathnasium locations worldwide. Students can receive help with homework at the center as well as preparation for standardized tests.

The Mathnasium event from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday will include free pie and games for kids.
