Great American Cookie set to open within Woodland Hills Mall on April 10

Saturday, March 28, 2015

Tim Linderman, vice president of real estate for Global Franchise Group, said his company's Great American Cookie stores have a secret weapon.

"When you go walking into the malls, you definitely catch the aroma," he said. "That tends to draw people in." That aroma will soon waft within Woodland Hills Mall, as a new kiosk location of Great American Cookie will open there April 10.

True to its name, Great American Cookie offers all kinds of variations on the baked treat, including basic chocolate chip and sugar cookies and the cookie cup, which is a hollow cupcake-shaped cookie with icing in the middle, and the Double Doozie, which is two M&M cookies sandwiched around cream filling.

Great American Cookie offers brownies as well, including a fudge brownie made with M&M's, a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup brownie and several cheesecake brownies.

The bakery also offers cookie cakes, which are large cookies with frosting on top that can be ordered in various types of designs to fit special occasions. Linderman said Great American Cookie is the original inventor of the cookie cake.

The Woodland Hills Mall location will be the second in Tulsa for Great American Cookie. The first is operating in Tulsa Promenade mall.

Linderman said he believes there's more than enough interest in Tulsa to sustain two locations.

"The Tulsa market's pretty big," he said. "You"ve got two malls that are well-known malls." Most of the 324 Great American Cookie locations are within enclosed malls, including their new locations. Despite rumblings from analysts that enclosed malls are starting to decline, Linderman said their strategy continues to pay off.

"In malls, you have an isolated consumer base," he said. "We get a lot of circulation. We do have some strategies to do off-mall locations, but malls continue to be good for us." The company is clustered largely around the American South and Southwest, though it's pushing to open more locations on the West Coast and in the Northeast. Its first location opened in 1977 within the Perimeter Mall in Atlanta.

In December, Entrepreneur Magazine ranked Great American Cookie number one in its annual Franchise 500 issue for the fifth year in a row.

Great American Cookie was purchased by Global Franchise Group, an Atlanta-based brand management company. Global Franchise also owns Marble Slab Creamery, Pretzel Time, Pretzelmaker, MaggieMoo's Ice Cream and Treatery and Hot Dog on a Stick.
