Good Samaritan Picks Up Bill for Bolingbrook Firefighters

Wednesday, June 24, 2015

Firefighters are used to helping people whenever they can, so it came as a pleasant surprise to see someone helped them out.

Every morning, Bolingbrook firefighters pitch in $10 for grocery money for the station they're in. They'll usually raise between $40 and $50 for the day, which will cover lunch and dinner for those at the station, according to Kevin Bramwell, firefighter and president of Bolingbrook Firefighters Local 3005, a union for 78 firefighters.

"They were shopping at Meijer and they got a call," Bramwell said.

The firefighters, Ryan Klavohn and Dave Zelinkski, dropped what they were doing and went out to the scene of the call.

"They left their groceries in the aisle and then came back to Meijer after the call was done," Bramwell said.

When they got back to the store, they were in the checkout lane when they received another call and once again had to abandon their cart. The firefighters then asked the engine crew back at the station to come and pick up their groceries.

Firefighter Dave Butcher was coming into the station after being out sick in the morning and stopped by the store to grab it.

Lt. John Merino was back at the station when Butcher arrived with the groceries. After going through them, they discovered the receipt.

The back of the receipt read: "It was my pleasure to pick up your grocery tab today. Thanks to you and everyone at your house for all you do. Enjoy!!" "We were all taken back a little bit," Merino said. "We said, " - Wow. That was really nice." - It's too bad we don't know who it was." The cost for the groceries was around $50.

Bramwell said Local 3005 will take the amount paid for the groceries, double it and donate it to the DuPage Food Pantry as a way to keep paying it forward.

"We always appreciate the support we get from the community" Bramwell said. "We try and give back to the community as much as possible and this is just another great way that the community supports us."
