Founder and President of Experimac Jim Muir opened the first location of the business - initially called The Mac Toy Store - in 2009 in West Palm Beach. The business expanded rapidly; in 2011, the location posted sales of $696,125; in 2012, the store did $1,161,595 of business; and by 2013, Experimac laid claim to sales of $1,834,861. Encouraged by this growth, Muir was motivated to franchise and, after discussions with United Franchise Group CEO Ray Titus, decided to join the $500 million system.
This partnership, said Titus, was based on a mutual interest in the concept. "All United Franchise Group brands use Apple products as the standard, a choice that speaks to our reverence for the brand," noted Titus. "Given United Franchise Group's history starting, building and growing successful companies, it made perfect sense to tackle a market that is untapped from a franchising point of view." Titus was interested in the concept for reasons beyond an appreciation for Apple products, however. "Jim's history in this market gave him tremendous exposure to the possibilities to profit with Experimac. The unique business model he developed takes advantage of multiple revenue streams. Customers can not only buy pre-owned products at a lower cost, they can also get their devices repaired and get upgraded memory and software along with accessories. The potential as a profitable business model is obvious." Initial reactions to Experimac have been resoundingly positive, added Titus. "Experimac's innovative business model is quickly attracting attention - we've already sold several locations and plan to open 25 Experimac stores in 2015, and 100 by the end of 2016." Titus added that Experimac's model is one which will offer franchisees the opportunity to buy products from the brand's exclusive site so they don't have to worry about searching for the products they will sell.
Experimac, which will also provide repair and installation services for products including restoring cracked cell phone and tablet screens, promises to be a winning venture added Titus. "We've got a great thing here; I've been in franchising decades and it's obvious that Experimac is a concept that fits United Franchise Group to a T."
