A new restaurant is looking to shake up the Panama City scene.
A Steak n' Shake is planning to open by the year's end near Best Buy at 1020 E. 23rd St., according to city documents. Right now, the popular chain's closest locations are in Tallahassee and Pensacola.
"This is the first one (in the area)," said Mike Lane, the city director of economic development and planning. "Panama City Beach doesn't have one yet, and it's always good when we get the first one, not the second one."
The franchise for the restaurant was purchased by local resident Joel Cowan, Lane said. Behind the scenes talks had been in the works for about a year before the announcement was made.
"For the last four years, we had been approaching corporate to see it we could get them to open one. They would never respond. Crickets," Lane said. "It's nice to see this happen."
The Steak n' Shake is one in a series of new businesses to announce plans to open near the intersection of 23rd Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. A Lucky's Market is under construction at the Albertson Plaza, and construction has started at the new Bay City Point shopping center, where a Cracker Barrel and Chick-Fil-A have announced plans to open.
