Good Works: Painting Franchise Helps Out Shelburne Museum

Companies and employees helping their communities

Scraping siding atop a cherry picker is all in a day's work for the 39-year-old organization College Pro Painting. The company employs college students to help businesses and homeowners revamp and protect their property with an old-fashioned paint job. They have recently extended their efforts to the Chittenden County community -- free.

Last year, the Burlington franchise of CPP remodeled the Ronald McDonald House. The job, which would have normally cost about $5,000, was done pro bono and in only a couple of days.

This year, the crew has united to take on the towering office of the Shelburne Museum, a formidable task with endless amounts of scraping and extra steps required to take EPA certified precautions to eliminate the danger of lead paint.

Andrew Sanders provided additional aid and his crew of College Pro Painters of Poultney, as well as Sherwin Williams, which donated a 5-gallon bucket of primer, 12 gallons for the siding and another five for the trim. The tower was easily tackled by using an equally massive cherry picker to scrape and prime.

"We decided on the Shelburne Museum due to the amount of their community involvement I have seen over the years, plus we have considered the number of personal ties we have with the museum," Burlington franchise owner Chris Talbert said. "After growing up in Chittenden County for my entire life, I feel the need to give back to such an amazing community that has offered me so much. Now that I am running my own small business, I have the opportunity to provide for some local organizations that I support." Talbert has been managing the Burlington franchise for two summers but has been painting for four years. His work as a painter and carpenter during high school and college helps him encourage college students to take part in the organization.

"College Pro, and specifically my franchise, employs college-age students because they are hard-working, intelligent and generally motivated individuals," Talbert said. "We have lined up enough work to keep 13 employees busy through all of July, but there are still spots available for anyone who wants to have their homes painted in August and September."
