"Kathy will often just call and make sure everything's OK," said Bob Doornenbal, the national company's new franchising agent. "Sometimes all people need is someone to make sure they're OK." His wife, Kathy, owns the Peterborough franchise of the chain, one of the first in the province. Doornenbal, former director of advertising at The Examiner, has signed on, too, and will use the city as a home base as he builds the brand provincewide.
"It was a way to stay in Peterborough," he said.
Driving Miss Daisy's focus is transportation. Drivers pick up seniors and get them to their destination. But there's more to it, Doornenbal said.
"(Staff) will be there to take notes at medical appointments for family members who can't be there," he said. "It's not just about Point A to Point B." The Doornenbals' Driving Miss Daisy franchise services Peterborough and Lindsay, with room for expansion.
With the population aging and Peterborough frequently referenced as having one of the oldest populations in the country there's a need for the service, Doornenbal said.
He'll be spending time on the road helping recruit more franchisees in Ontario, he said. The company has a lot of locations out west but is just starting to expand into this province.
As well as working with franchise development in Ontario, Doornenbal will also be in charge of national marketing for the company.
There are already 55 Driving Miss Daisy franchises in Alberta and British Columbia, and four in Ontario.
