Flu shot demand & emergency response top agenda
Baltimore-based Passport Health, the largest purchaser of vaccines in the U.S. second only to the Federal Government, will hold its annual meeting in Chicago, Illinois from Friday, August 11 through Sunday, August 13 at the Hyatt Lodge at McDonald's Campus. Approximately 75 Passport Health franchise owners and managers from 120 nationwide offices will attend the meeting, which traditionally takes place as the summer international travel season winds down, but before flu vaccination season. This is the sixth year that Passport Health, a full-service travel health and immunization business, has held its annual meeting in Chicago. Topics on the agenda include supply and demand for this season's flu vaccine, the new trend of physician offices to outsource flu clinics to Passport Health, expansion of clinical vaccine trials at all nationwide Passport Health offices, new trends in exotic diseases that affect overseas travelers, government contract opportunities, and a summary report on Passport Health's emergency response to companies and clients affected by Hurricane Katrina last fall. Passport Health has the ability to cope with the flu vaccine supply challenge, dispensing more than one million flu shots nationwide per year. Passport Health's Baltimore headquarters has signed contracts for its newest service for scheduled flu shot clinics at private doctors' offices and expects contracts nationwide, in addition to traditional work-site vaccinations. Vaccinations are done by experienced Passport Health registered nurses. Passport Health does all vaccine storage and handling and has professionals available to answer patient concerns or questions following vaccination. "A lot of doctors have realized it's not cost-effective to handle the flu vaccine anymore, especially with the past five years of the flu vaccine supply debacle," says Fran Lessans, RN, MS, and CEO of Passport Health, who just won the 2006 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award for healthcare business in Maryland. "We are becoming a physician extender for vaccinations. Primary care doctors' offices are unable to balance phone calls and appointments from worried patients with the unpredictability of when they will receive their vaccines. Passport Health alleviates the stress of this situation." Of Passport Health's 120 locations, four offices are located in the Chicago and Moline, Illinois area at 2500 West Higgins Road, #1271, Hoffman Estates; 30 S. Michigan Ave., #502; 250 E. Center Drive, Suite 202, Vernon Hills; and at the Genesis Health System, 2350 41st St., Moline. Founded in 1997, Passport Health's diverse services include on-site flu clinics and bioterrorism response, travel and back-to-school immunizations, travel health counseling with itinerary-specific education, travel health products and international security counseling. Passport Health has been involved in providing anthrax vaccinations to the U.S. Military, Post Office and Federal employees, as well as providing smallpox vaccination training.
